Actress and movie maker, Flora Suya, will leave on Thursday for the United States of America for the Silicon Valley African Film Festival (Scaff).

Suya’s movie, My Mother’s Story was invited to screen at the Festival.

“I am excited and happy to be part of this festival,” Suya said.

Now in its seventh year, the festival which has also screened some of the country’s movies including The Designer by Chimwemwe Mkwezalamba, seeks to promote an understanding and appreciation of Africa and Africans through motion picture.

Aptly themed Africa through the African Lens, the annual festival is the only film festival in California that is exclusively focused on films made by African filmmakers and presents over 40 films by seasoned and emerging filmmakers from across the African continent.

The 2016 festival highlights include African drumming and dance, film screenings and post screening dialogue with filmmakers in attendance.

After being invited for the festival, Suya sounded an SOS for support for the trip.

According to her, by the time she received the invite, she had used her resources on filming another movie.

Member of Parliament for Lilongwe City Central, David Bisnowaty, came to Suya’s rescue and donated a return air ticket worth K1.5 million.

“I would like to thank the MP for giving me the return air tickets. I don’t take it for granted and this will give me an opportunity to network with other filmmakers,” the actress said.

Bisnowaty said during the donation of the ticket in Lilongwe that it is the duty of everyone to support the arts in the country.

“It’s important that we assist our artists in the country grow their talents.

Flora Suya is one of the best actresses in the country and having her movie invited to this festival, I thought I should help and I urge other well wishers to assist as well,” he said.

The festival is expected to run from October 14-16, 2016. Suya said she will return to the country on October 29.
