Dikamawoko Dance Troupe recently showed its prowess in the art of traditional dances when it entertained people at Beehive Centre in Chilomoni, Blantyre.

The troupe did well to remind the audience of the importance of preserving culture when it offered a basket of traditional dances performed in different parts of the country including Beni.

“It was a good platform for us to show what we can do as Dikamawoko but also remind people that culture is important and we need to preserve but also at the same time we also wanted to take part in disseminating information on some of the bad cultural practices,” said Blessings Hiwa, a member of Dikamawoko.

The event was organised by Mother Teresa Children Centre through its outreach team and was part of commemorating Day of African child on a community level.

The Day of the African

Child is celebrated on June 16 every year since 1991 and was first initiated by the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).

Acting Centre Manager Vasco Pafupi said the event gave a platform to students to appreciate culture but also took time out to showcase their talents.

The event was celebrated under the theme Banning harmful cultural practices in Malawi.

Pafupi said Beehive Centre for Social Enterprise is a non- profit organisation which has different enterprises including Mother Teresa Children Centre.

“We want through this platform to disseminate information on some of the bad cultural practices and we made sure we involved all primary schools in this township through our extended school workers,” he said.

Before the different performances that included poetry, traditional dances and drama, the event started with a big walk from Nthukwa in Chilomoni to Beehive.

“Our vision is to transform the lives of children and their families around Chilomoni community by offering a number of opportunities and that include offering of sponsored places to the vulnerable children,” Pafupi said.

He said they have lots of activities going on at their premises citing among others tester groups where parents from the community have the opportunity to different lessons including baking, cooking, knitting and hand sawing.
