DPP ropes in Mangochi Member of Parliament

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on Sunday welcomed into its family, Member of Parliament (MP) for Mangochi North, Benedicto Chambo.

Speaking at Mpilipiri Ground in Makanjira, DPP Secretary General, Ecklen Kudontoni, described the joining of Chambo as a sign that the party was still attractive to Malawians.

Kudontoni said as a party, the DPP is interested in making sure that it is welcoming into its fold, only members who are willing and interested in helping the country’s leadership in solving various challenges which Malawians are currently facing.

“As Malawi’s politics dictate, there is nobody who can rule this country without the support of a political party. DPP is currently ruling this country with the leadership of Peter Mutharika and we want only those members who will contribute to the vision of the country’s leadership to join the party,” said Kudontoni.

Chambo won the seat on an independent ticket in 2014 after defeating People’s Party’s Ibrahim Matola.

During the 2015/2016 budget sitting of Parliament, Chambo wrote the Speaker of Parliament to have joined United Democratic Front (UDF) but he later withdrew his membership following what he said unclear working relationship between DPP and UDF, urging that as an independent MP, it was not proper for him to join government through another party.

Commenting on his joining of the ruling DPP, Chambo said he was interested in serving his constituency with support from the ruling DPP.

“For a long time I have always wanted to join a political party but I couldn’t find a perfect one. However, after a careful consideration, we have agreed as a constituency to join DPP because it is the only party which seems to be stable at the moment,” Chambo said.
