Women group fights for empowerment

A non-governmental organisation in Mzuzu has asked microfinance institutions in the country to empower women economically.

Chiwanja Women Organisation project coordinator, Grace Mwambungu, said this at a caucus meeting held in Mzuzu City this week.

“Most women in the country have the interest to start businesses, but they do not have capital. So microfinance institutions should open up to women to access loans,” she said.

Mwambungu said microfinance companies in the country should adopt the culture of supporting women by charging them reasonable loan interest to boost their businesses.

She also lamented that some bosses, who work for finance institutions, take advantage of women poverty to exploit them sexually.

Micca Mhango, a member of Chiwanja Women Organization, concurred with Mwambungu’s concern and said this frustrates their chances of getting loans.
