Blue Eagles clinch top spot

Blue Eagles on Wednesday soared with a 6-0 thrashing of Premier Bet Wizards FC at Nankhaka Stadium, Lilongwe to clinch the first round top spot in the TNM Super League.

It was the heaviest victory recorded by any team in the first round this season.

Following the win, Eagles have 31 points from 15 games, two points above second-placed Silver Strikers, who lost 3-0 to Mafco in their last match of the first round last Sunday.

On a cold afternoon, Wizards Technical Director, Peter Mponda, buried his face in his palms for the better part of the game in disbelief.

For the cops, it was mission accomplished as they walked shoulders high in the streets of Lilongwe after sealing the top spot.

It was a sweet revenge for the Eagles after Wizards dumped them out of the Carlsberg Cup last month.

The cops owe it to Maxwell Salambula, who claimed his second hat-trick of the first round, the only player to achieve that feat this season.

The other goals came from Stuart Mbunge, Chisomo Chilasa and Gilbert Chirwa. Eagles, who led 3-0 at the break, will receive K300,000 for finishing on top.

Eagles’ head coach, Decklerk Msakakuona, was satisfied with the performance of his charges whereas Mponda conceded defeat.
