Mobile phone service provider TNM Limited has donated K3 million to Operation Smile Malawi, a local non-governmental organisation, that is operating on Malawians born with lip defects.

The group is currently doing its work at Zomba Central Hospital.

TNM Southern Region Distribution Manager, Allan Wittika, said the donation will go a long way in changing the lives of Malawians.

“We are optimistic that the provision of surgery services by Operation Smile will change the lives of children who could hardly speak or smile and remove them from isolation.

“TNM remains firmly committed to contributing to Malawi’s socio-economic development through direct assistance in the health sector. We continue to partnering with Operation Smile for their initiative of providing free treatment to Malawians,” said Wittika.

Operation Smile Malawi Country Director, Ibrahim Nthalika, said the donation by TNM was timely and will help bring back a smile on 100 faces.

He said the organisation needs more support in order to reach out to many people.

“This year we identified over 200 patients, but we are only able to operate on 150 due to lack of funds. We, therefore, appeal to the corporate world to support us in this initiative,” said Nthalika.

Approximately one in 1,000 children in Africa is born every year with cleft lip or cleft palate and one in 10 children do not survive to their first birthday.
