Malawi Under-21 National Netball Team started their campaign for the Africa Youth Netball Championship impressively when they beat Lesotho 81-21 in Botswana on Sunday.
Despite their poor preparations, the Junior Queens underlined their hunger and intent to compete for the trophy as well as qualify for next year’s World Youth Netball Championship.
During the opening game against Lesotho, Malawi led the first quarter by 19-3 before extending it to 38-7 at half time.
Malawi increased the lead to 58-9 in the third quarter before wrapping up the victory in the final quarter.
Prison Sisters attacker Ethel Ng’ambi and Civonets Youth shooter Cynthia Khunga had a grand game as they combined to down Lesotho.
Malawi meet Swaziland then on Wednesday play against Zimbabwe.
The Junior Queens will face rivals, South Africa, on Thursday and Uganda on Friday morning and the hosts Botswana in the afternoon.
The junior Queens will conclude their campaign with a game against neighbours, Zambia.
This is the first time for Junior Queens to take part in a developmental competition since 2009 when they competed at the World Youth Championship in Cook Islands.
