Jill Biden, wife to US Vice President, Joe Biden, has reaffirmed her country’s commitment to supporting Malawi and ensuring that hunger does not derail development that the country has gained.
Biden was in Malawi to appreciate progress of projects that the U.S is funding and on Wednesday, met First Lady Gertrude Mutharika at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.
During the meeting, Biden said she was happy with the collaboration of the two countries in ensuring that communities are food secure and economically empowered.
She said the two countries should discuss further on how they can work together to achieve gender equality, eliminate child marriages and gender based violence among others.
In her remarks, Mutharika apologised to Biden for the Zomba fracas which blocked Biden’s convoy on Tuesday by students from Chancellor College.
The students blocked her motorcade in protest of fees hike in the university of Malawi constituent colleges.
“I must apologise on the unfortunate incident that happened in Zomba,” said Mutharika.
She commended Washington for its efforts to advance women empowerment and eliminate gender based violence globally.
Mutharika further urged the USA to partner with Malawi in empowering women and also in the fight against the abductions and killings of people with albinism in the country.
Earlier, Biden visited Chigonthi Producers and Marketing Cooperatives in the area of Tradition Authority M’bang’ombe, where WFP implemented a project that empowers small holder farmers with business skills and effective crop production
Biden was in the country to assess the food shortage and look into some issues regarding the economic empowerment and education opportunities for women and girls.
