Can Karonga indeed sign Ivorian strikers?

They might be surviving on handouts from communities, but when it comes to ambition, it seems Karonga United have no limits.

If the club’s chairperson Alufeyo Chipanga is to be believed, Karonga will invite two players—Siribe Aboubacar and N’guessan Angolah—from Ivory Coast for trials.

“An agent from France recommended the players to us. We have been in touch for three months and we will finalise an invitation letter with the General Secretary today,” Chipanga explained.

“Karonga is a community team and the community has accepted to host the two players. We can afford to pay them. I can even personally afford to pay them. We cannot compare with other teams that have sound sponsorship, but we pay our players well.”

The strikers reportedly play for some team in Abidjan, and it is unclear if quality players can come to play in the TNM Super League instead of Europe.

“We have earmarked the two players for the second round. We are negotiating with Silver Strikers for the services of Chimwemwe Chisambi. We are also eyeing two players from Dedza Young Soccer,” Chipanga added.

Karonga have never been the since pulling a shock 1-0 league win over Nyasa Big Bullets three weeks ago at Mzuzu Stadium.

Placed second from bottom with six points from 12 games, the rookies have lost two consecutive games, the latest being a 5-0 humiliation by Mafco last week.

Karonga coach Kondwani Mwalweni yesterday confirmed getting wind of reports about the two foreign strikers and that he was eagerly waiting for them.
