Katenga Humming Bees’ member revisits old songs

Veteran musician Dam Dam Longwe has revealed that he is in a project of reviving all the old songs they produced including the popular A Gondwe Akalandira Ndalama.

Longwe, who starred with Katenga Humming Bees in the 1970s before he later went on to form his own group known as Tiwone Orchestra, said a lot of people particularly the older generation been pressurising him to revisit the old songs.

“We did these songs a long time ago and although songs like A Gondwe Akalandira Ndalama, is still enjoying airplay in some of the local radio stations, we did not put them into an album,” he said.

In his 60s, Longwe, who is an active member of the Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum), said most of their songs were recorded through Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).

“Most of the members I used to perform with passed away but I thought I should do something and so we should have an album shortly,” said Longwe.

Apart from A Gondwe Akalandira Ndalama, some of the songs that will make the album include Mchipululu, Kumanda, Patricia Samalira and Mtuwamtuwa Chiuta.

“I actually would love to launch the album once everything is finalised. We are also looking for support from well wishers who can help us come up with a better album,” he said.

According to Longwe, the album is being produced at Mathumela Studios in Lilongwe.

“Our music has history, we have come from afar and so the country needs not to forget the veteran musicians. I know the younger generation is currently enjoying urban music but they should also take time to enjoy the old music,” said Longwe.

Some of the names Longwe used to perform with in the past years include Joseph Chiumia, Michael Hola and Zebron Nkhoma.
