Music has always been a part of him, although the trappings of success that come with it have not always followed him.
Still, reggae musician Khuza Rampi — who launched his music career in 1999 and has shared the stage with the late Evison Matafale and Lambanie Dube, among notable artists — is not giving up.
“Since I produce my first single at Rhemu Studios, under the tutorage of the late Chuma Soko in 2001, I have not looked back because I want to share a message that seeks to change society in a positive way. I am building on the journey I started after producing thy two, singles Nthawi isadakwane and Chilichonse in 2001,” said Rampi.
The Blantyre-based artist, whose recently-produced songs such as ‘Opanda boot’, ‘Chikondi’ and ‘Maupo’ are enjoying airplay on a number of radio stations, said he has been forced to visit the studios after observing that HIV and Aids and other preventable health conditions continue to eat through the fabric of society.
Rampi, whose first album, Nthawi did not shake the country after being released in 2014, said he has worked on ends that made his previous works loose and is set to take the country by storm in his next music project Njoka saweta, slated for release this year.
“Otherwise, the single Opanda boot , which has been recorded at Marvin Hanke’s Audio Clinic in Naperi, Blantyre, is doing well at the moment and I am happy that the proliferation of radio stations has made it possible for artists to enjoy the cake of airplay. You find that, when one disk jockey does not like your song, there is always someone, somewhere in this country, who does,” said Rampi.
The artist cut his teeth in music while at Mulunguzi Secondary School in Zomba in 1999. This was after the late Ammon M’geduyi of Freedom Band roped him in and nurtured his talent.
But it took 15 years for him to release his first album ‘Nyimbo’, but just under two years to come up with a second album.
“It has been a learning experience and I am now ready for the big stage,” said Rampi.
Maybe, as someone who travelled and performed alongside the late Evison Matafale when launching Lambanie Dube’s Yankho Likadzafika album, he has not been pushing hard enough.
