Trade portal to woo investors

Government will Thursday be launching an online trade portal which will make it easier for traders and investors to comply with regulatory requirements associated with the import and export of goods.

Through the facility, government is also hoping to help Malawi comply with the World Trade Organisation’s agreements on trade facilitation. The portal will be hosted by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism with support from the World Bank.

The launch will take place at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre and will be presided over by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Joseph Mwanamvekha.

According to Mwanamvekha, the portal will contain all trade related regulatory information for import, export and transit trade.

“The web based page will also be answering queries to traders in relation to all the obligations they need to comply with in order to import or export specific goods. The trade portal will also make life easier for traders as they will access information, including fees and charges, at a click of a button,” he said.

The portal which is also a step towards the implementation of a National Single Window (NSW).

The successful implementation of the page will also help Malawi improve its ranking on the World Bank Doing Business index and the Global Competitiveness index.
