Mafco striker Richard Mbulu has entered a second Golden Boot race of the season.
Mbulu, who is Presidential Cup leading scorer with 16 goals, has transferred his devastating cup form to the TNM Super League.
The quick-heeled forward’s double in a 5-0 win over Karonga United on Sunday saw him become the league’s leading scorer with eight goals from 12 games.
Yohane Malunga also scored twice and Joseph Donsa grabbed the other in Mzuzu as Mafco took their tally to 22 points to cement their third place. The soldiers are perched three points behind leaders, Blue Eagles.
After scoring the equaliser in a 2-1 win over Azam Tigers at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday, Peter Wadabwa also staked his claim for the Golden Boot. He has seven goals alongside Manasseh Chiyesa and Anthony Banda of Kamuzu Barracks and Epac, respectively.
The strikers have a tough task to surpass the league’s 18-goal mark. For over a decade, domestic strikers have not scored more than 18 in a season.
Overall, Super League of Malawi (Sulom) records indicate that 222 goals have been registered from 95 matches, with Kamuzu Barracks scoring the most 25 in 14 games. Nyasa Big Bullets have the tightest defence having let in just seven and Karonga United have conceded the most 23.
Epac’s Banda, Gastin Simkonda (Moyale) and Maxwell Salambula of Eagles have hat-tricks to their names this season.
Eagles’ Stevie Chagoma and Stevie Msiska (Karonga United) hold unenviable records of having scored own goals at this stage of the league. Bottom-placed Max Bullets are yet to win after 12 matches.
