New contractor for Bingu Stadium

Ministry of Sports and Culture is identifying a new contractor to complete some works at Bingu National Stadium (BNS) in Lilongwe.

The new contractor is expected to carry over from where Chinese Anhui Foreign Construction Company (Affec) stopped.

The Chinese contractor did not complete the construction because government required extra money outside Chinese government funding for the facility. Parliament only approved the extra-budget recently.

Spokesperson for the ministry, Christopher Mbukwa, Wednesday disclosed that the process of identifying the contractor might be finalised this month.

“The works are to start soon but I cannot indicate the exact date. However, suffice to say that the month of July will be dedicated to finalising the procurement of a contractor. The ministry is currently following all procurement procedures,” Mbukwa explained.

The new contractor will fix a sewerage line and a high power voltage cable for the stadium to be fully ready for use.

The stadium is expected to be ready by September after Parliament approved K841 million extra-budget.

“I cannot give the exact time frame of completion, but we want the works to be expedited so that the stadium is put to use the soonest,” Mbukwa added.

The Olympic- designed facility has components such as a synthetic running track, natural grass, a football pitch, CCTV, VIP lounge, shopping and exhibition rooms, press galleries, treatment rooms and car park.

Chinese government funded the project to the tune of US$70 million (about K29 billion) a concession loan, which Malawi government will repay in 20 years.
