As cases of defilement continue to rise in Mangochi, the district’s First Grade Magistrate’s Court on Monday sentenced a 56-year-old man for being found guilty of defiling two primary school girls aged 10 and 12 years, respectively.

The convict, David Sikini of Ching’anda Village, Traditional Authority Makanjira in the district, was arrested on June 27 after police received reports from the girls’ parents that Sikini had defiled and impregnated one of the girls.

Presenting his case, State Prosecutor, Maxwell Mwaluka, told the court that on the day of the incident, Sikini invited the two girls into his house where he defiled them and gave them K200 each to remain silent.

“After defiling them, he told them not to report the incidence to their parents. But after a while, one of the girls’ parents noticed that her daughter of 10 years was having difficulties in walking. After being quizzed, the girl revealed that she and her friend were defiled by the suspect,” said Mwaluka.

When passing judgement, Magistrate Ronald Mbwana said the man deserved a custodial sentence in order to protect other girls from being abused, hence the 10 years sentence for each offence which will be served concurrently.

In a related development, Police in Zomba have arrested 45 year old Ishmael Saidi for allegedly defiling a 13-year-old girl contrary to Section 138 of the Penal Code.

Zomba Police Public Relations Officer Patricia Sipiliano explained that the suspect who hails from Liwundi Village, TA Mlumbe in the district is related to the girl and he had been coming to the girl’s house to take her for walks.

He is reported to have started defiling the girl until she got pregnant, which led to his arrest after the victim’s parents reported the suspect to police.
