Blue Eagles are aiming at nothing short of finishing the first round on the driving seat to increase their chances of winning the TNM Super League championship for the first time.
The cops returned to the top of the league on Saturday after thumping rookies, Karonga United, 3-1 at Nankhaka Stadium in Lilongwe to move two points clear at the summit of the league.
Following the victory, Eagles have 25 points from 11 games, two points above second-placed Silver Strikers, who were on bye over the weekend.
Eagles mentor Derklerk Msakakuona was positive that his charges would finish the first round as winners.
“We know that it will be tough to win top spot in the first round but we will work hard to achieve that,” he said.
Karonga coach, Kondwani Mwalweni, whose side shocked Nyasa Big Bullets last week with a 1-0 victory in Mzuzu, said his charges lost to Eagles due to failure to stick to a game-plan.
Vitumbiko Kumwenda grabbed the early opener for Eagles before John Malidadi Jnr added the second in stoppage time of the first half.
Malidadi’s goal was aided into the net by Karonga’s defender Steve Msiska.
In the second half, Twisi Kalolokesya beat Eagles goalkeeper Chakonda Majanga at the near post with a thunderous strike to reduce the arrears.
Sensing danger, Eagles increased the rhythm of the match and hit the last nail on Karonga’s coffin through Gilbert Chirwa.
Still on Saturday, Red Lions returned to winning ways with 4-0 victory over Civo United at Zomba Community Ground on Saturday.
