Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has finally severed its ties with Ernest Mtawali as Malawi National Football Team coach, and replaced him with his enstranged former deputy, Nsanzurwimo Ramadhan, in interim capacity.
In an interview yesterday, the Burundian said he would comment more on his appointment—from August 10 to September 3 2016-— once Fam serves him with an employment letter.
“Coaching the national team is at another level. You must have the experience as you meet the best teams in the world. It is not an easy task, but I am ready for it. I have the experience having worked at the highest level in several countries,” explained Ramadhan, who fell out with Mtawali after accusing him of working in isolation.
Ending speculat ion over Mtawali’s nine-month reign that was punctuated by mixed fortunes, Fam Thursday said they had decided against extending one-year contracts for Mtawali and Ramadhan beyond July 31 2016.
Fam stated that they will engage Ramadhan to oversee the Flames’ remaining 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Swaziland on September 3 2016.
“This decision has been made as a result of poor performance of the Malawi National Football Team over the past year,” reads a statement, which Fam General Secretary, Suzgo Nyirenda, signed.
“Fam would like to thank the two coaches for the services they rendered to the nation in the past one year and wish them all the best in their future endeavours.”
Fam technical sub-committee meeting of Saturday at Mpira Village in Blantyre proved to be the last straw for Mtawali, whose reign was characterised by commendable rebuilding with the youth, toxic fall-out with senior players and indifferent results.
Mtawali, whose combination with Ramadhan looked like a mere union of convenience, leaves a trail of six defeats, five wins and four draws.
