Gastin Simkonda gate-crashes into Golden Boot chase

Moyale Barracks striker Gastin Simkonda re-joined the TNM Super League while into its fifth week, yet after hammerring a hat-trick on Sunday he has gate-crashed into the Golden Boot Award chase.

After missing action last season while on Malawi Defence Force assignment in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Simkonda’s treble in 5-3 win over Epac FC in Lilongwe announced his return to domestic football.

Since his return, he has scored four in four games. And the 2014 Golden Boot Award winner said the best was yet to come from him.

“I am fortunate that I found the league in the early stages. Am I still good? That is up to my coach and the public to judge. I feel that my form can get better, so winning the Golden Boot is very much possible,” said the former Malawi Under-17 striker.

“I was out of competitive football but I am glad that our bosses in the DRC bought us a ball. We could play some games alongside veterans such as Joel Chipofya just to keep fit.”

Simkonda has joined in the Golden Boot race the likes of Chiukepo Msowoya, Peter Wadabwa (who scored a hat-trick in 3-1 win over Red Lions on Saturday) and Richard Mbulu of Nyasa Big Bullets, Be Forward Wanderers and Mafco, respectively. Msowoya and Mbulu lead on five goals each.

“Scoring is about team-work. I believe we will keep on growing stronger together. As long as I perform, I know the door for my return to the Flames shall always be open,” the Moyale hit-man concluded.
