South African money transfer firm, Mukuru, on Friday entered into an agreement with Peoples Trading Centre which will see consumers receiving money from any Peoples shop across the country.
The service allows recipients to receive their money from any continent.
Mukuru Marketing Officer, Peggy Mhone, said they decided to partner with Peoples because it an established retailer with a good reputation.
She said Peoples has an active network that services the community nationwide and makes Mukuru’s services more accessible.
“Our customers can collect money at any time People’s stores even during public holidays or weekend. Mukuru is a trusted money transfer provider, regulated by the Reserve Bank of Malawi,” she said.
Mhone said currently Mukuru is only transacting in receiving money and not sending.
“We were awarded a licence to transact in receiving money only by the RBM, but we are discussing with the central bank on the sending aspect and we hope very soon we should be able to provide that service,” said Mhone.
Peoples Chief Executive Officer, Ken Mthunzi, said the partnership will help ease the burden on Malawians.
He said customers will no longer have the trouble of travelling long distances to collect money sent by their loved ones.
“We are driven into this mainly because it accords us enhanced opportunity to offer other social service to Malawians,” said Mthuzi.
He further said the service will currently be provided at 20 Peoples shops and they include Blantyre Metro, Nyambadwe Express, Lunzu Cash and Carry, Mwanza Peoples, Ntcheu, Mulanje, Limbe, Zomba, Balaka and Mangochi among others.
