After a long wait, Venom Hooligans ended Blantyre Sports Club’s A dominance in FMB Lesley Seven’s Rugby Tournament on Saturday. Playing at home, BSC A were tipped to retain the trophy for a sixth successive time but they were shocked as the Hooligans recorded 27 points to outclass the hosts.
On their way to the victory, Hooligans scored four tries, two conversions and a penalty kick while BSC A had three tries which accumulated to 15 points.
Hooligans captain Dumisani Kumwenda said it was a dream come true for the team.
“We were not the favourites but we did not let that affect us. We encouraged each other and we really fought well. This victory is a reward of team work,” he said.
BSC A Captain Graham Staines was modest in defeat, saying Hooligans deserved to win.
FMB Head of Marketing, Sylvia Mataka, said the bank was encouraged by the strides which the sport has made in four years of the bank’s sponsorship.
“We are happy with the structures that have enabled the sport to grow among the youths. There were four developmental sides and this is quite encouraging,” she said.
