President Peter Mutharika has asked people in the country to desist from being involved in vandalism and instead be responsible in helping to develop the country.

Mutharika made the call during the official opening of Neno Rural Growth Development Centre Thursday.

Mutharika said Neno has been a forsaken place for a long time and his government has plans to improve infrastructure in the district. He, however, chastised those involved in vandalism saying their derail the country’s development.

“My government is geared up to ensure that social economic development improves in the country but there is a group of people I fail to understand. sindimadziwa kuti kaya ndi umbuli, kaya ndi utsiru sindimadziwa iyayi koma pali anthu ena amene kwao ndikuononga basi. Kuononga zipangizo za madzi, zamagetsi choncho chitukuko chingapite bwanji patsogolo? (I do not understand whether it is out of sheer ignorance or foolery, but there are some people who are only bent at vandalising water and electricity equipment. How can we develop with that? ” asked Mutharika.

Mutharika described the rural growth centre as a starting point of more developments to come in the district.

He mentioned that the infrastructure is also an indication of good relations that is there between government and development partners such as chiefs and the donor community. Mutharika explained that development cannot be achieved if rural areas are marginalised hence there is a need to improve infrastructure in rural areas.

He also promised that his government is planning to build 10 to 15 rural growth centres across the country.

The President further urged vendors who will be plying their trade in the market to pay for the water and electricity bills so that operations should continue to go on smoothly.

“The responsibility of running the facility now lies in your hands. Make sure you pay the fees that district assembly officials come to collect and any other bill involved. In addition, there should be hygiene in this market. Do not litter anywhere, please make sure sanitation is being followed around this place,” said the president
