Chigoli Academy of Lilongwe celebrated its first anniversary in style after its Under-12 and- 14 teams won a tri-team football tournament after beating their Mafco counterparts in Salima on Tuesday.

Chigoli Under-12 team lost to Likumbo Academy, but left as champions having beaten Mafco 3-0. Mafco also beat Likumbo Academy 2-0.

In a press release, the Lilongwe academy said it was targeting the development of 1,000 young players.

“Chigoli is putting in place a number of developments to be announced over the coming weeks that will help build the future towards future Malawian footballers,” reads the academy’s statement.

“Chigoli continues its belief that developing the next generation of young players is the only solution for creating a better future for Malawian football. There is no quick fix in football. Belgium’s current crop of stars came through a development shift, which focused on children that began back in 2001.”

The Lilongwe academy, through community football tournaments, wants to develop an Under-10 squad with a view to graduate into Under-12 and Under-14.

Currently, Chigoli has a 28-player squad selected from Under-12 community tournaments involving 2000 players across Lilongwe.
