UGI, Airtel strike mobile money payment deal

United General Insurance (UGI) on Wednesday entered into an agreement with Airtel Money which will see UGI customers paying insurance premiums on the Airtel Money platform.

UGI General Manager, Phyles Kachingwe, said the two firms have partnered to offer a product that is efficient, effective and meets the needs of the people of Malawi.

“Looking at the adoption of mobile money as a service by Malawians, it was seen that insurance services are transactions that people go through on a regular basis and we thought this could be a better way to meet current trends by offering a product that makes paying premiums easy and reliable. With Airtel Money hassles of paying premiums are now a thing of the past,” said Kachingwe.

She said in the first phase, the facility will look at clients paying their premiums on motor insurance covers only, adding that other insurance covers will be added on later.

“Clients will be able to access the product by simply dialing *211# and selecting the option for pay bill, selecting the option other, and making the payment to the nickname UnitedGI for Blantyre, UnitedGI2 for Lilongwe and UnitedGI3 for Mzuzu. Once a client makes their premium payment, they can then collect their disc at our branches in Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu,” said Kachingwe.

Airtel Money Country Manager, Francis Matseketsa, said the arrangement will help UGI customers minimise the risks associated with moving around with cash.

“This will enable UGI customers to pay their premiums from the comfort of their homes at any time, including at night or weekends,” said Matseketsa.
