Kinnah Phiri scouting

Former Flames coach Kinnah Phiri says he wants to sign three TNM Super League players for his Tanzania Vodacom Premier League side, Mbeya City.

Phiri said on Monday that he was eyeing players to fill positions of first-choice goalkeeper, midfielder and striker at Mbeya.

“I will go for players that will impress me and priority will be on those from Malawian clubs. However, if they do not impress me then I will be forced to look for players from clubs in other countries such as Zambia and Zimbabwe,” he said.

Phiri stressed that he will not be restricted to scout for players from his childhood club, Nyasa Big Bullets, where he is a trustee.

“We are also planning to have some friendly games in Malawi with Bullets, and they will be played in July instead of June because the clearance letter from Tanzania Football Federation came two days before the dates set for the games,” he said.

He added that after rescuing Mbeya from relegation in the Vodacom League last season, he was targeting a top-three finish next season, which kicks-off in August.

Meanwhile, former Fam official, Julius Mithi, has commended Phiri for giving priority to Malawi on scouting for the players on Mbeya’s behalf.

“Tanzania is one of the countries that are geared at developing sports, especially football. Apart from that, Mbeya City is one of those richest cities in Tanzania and I am sure the financial status of the players will change if they sign for Mbeya. To Kinnah, I would encourage him to go for the young crop and not the same old brooms playing in the Flames,” Mithi said.

Phiri also served as technical director for Mzuni FC before signing a two-year contract for Mbeya.
