Anthony Kitha 54 and 34-year-old Bright Kumwenda have been arrested for being found in illegal possession of four pieces of ivory, national police deputy publicist Thomeck Nyaude has said.
The ivory weighs 19 kilogrammes and is valued at K26.6 million.
“The suspects have been arrested in a joint investigation by the department of wildlife and the police which was led by officers from the national police headquarters and others from the parks and wildlife. They have been arrested in Kasungu and Rumphi districts, respectively,” said Nyaude.
He added that the suspects killed two elephants in Kasungu National Park, an offence which is contrary to section 86 subsection (1) of the Parks and Wildlife Act.
The suspects are expected to appear before court on Tuesday where they will answer charges of illegal possession of specimen of the protected species.
Kitha hails from Malopama Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kilipula in Karonga while Kumwenda hails from Chinjikumwenda Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chikulamayembe in Rumphi.
