In a sudden change of heart, Be Forward Wanderers have decided against signing Nigerian defender, Aseperi Saheed Oluwa Shinaayomi, citing internal politics.
Shinaayomi was expected in the country a few weeks ago, but the Nomads’ General Secretary, Mike Butao, has confirmed that they would no longer sign the player and three other Nigeria Under-23 players that were offered to the club.
“We have done this because there has been a lot of negative talk since we signed Amos Bello (from Nigeria) and Genki Nakamura (from Japan),” he explained. “People have been making unfounded allegations that we are struggling in the league because our local players are disgruntled because they are paid less than the foreigners. But that is not true. It is very sad because the allegations are coming from some of our fans.”
Butao said there would be no compensation for Shinaayomi because he had not yet signed a contract.
“He just signed a pre-contract. He was due to undergo trials before we offered him a full contract. We want the dust to settle first and maybe we can go for him again and the other three players offered to us,” he said.
Butao also refuted recent news that Bello had filed charges against the club for breach of contract due to unpaid signing-on fees.
Butao said they had made an arrangement to pay Bello, Foster Namwera and Alfred Manyozo Jnr their signing on fees in installments.
“The players were signed after we had exhausted our transfer funds from Be Forward Limited. We agreed that we will be paying them in installments through gate revenue and that is the procedure at the moment. We are sad that every week, there is negative publicity about the club. We don’t know what people’s motives are,” he said while refusing to reveal how much they owe the players.
The Nomads have made an indifferent start to the 2016 Super League season and they are currently 12th on the standings with eight points from seven matches.
They have only won once, drawn five times and lost once.
