The organisers of the schools French Drama Competition have announced that the regional finals for the competition will take place on November 12.
The competition is organised by Jacaranda Foundation and the French Embassy in Malawi in collaboration with the Association of French Teachers in Malawi.
One of the officials, who is part of the driving force of the competition Poya Chapweteka said yesterday that they have finally sent invitations to schools to participate in the competition.
“We have sent invitations to schools, this time around we want more schools to participate. This is the 29th edition and will be held under the theme Qui seme le vent recolte la tempete which means they that sow the wind shall reap the whirlwind or you reap what you sow,” said Chapweteka.
He said the regional finals will be held in Blantyre, Zomba, Lilongwe and Mzuzu before the national final on November 26.
“We organise the French Drama Competition differently from the Association of the Teaching of English in Malawi (Atem) drama competition,” said Chapweteka.
According to the invitation letter, the schools are required to produce a 25 to 30 minutes play in French.
Eight schools are expected to compete in the national final.
Some of the categories that will be selected include Best Actor and Actress, Best French Speaker (Male) and Best French Speaker (Female).
“I would like to appeal to schools to work hard and perfect their productions because there are plans to publish these plays,” he said.
Chapweteka also said they are currently working on prizes for the winners.
The competition has seen teachers of the winning schools being sent outside.
For instance in September 2014, the teacher for Phwezi Girls Secondary, who were the winners of the 2014 contest went to Lusaka, Zambia.
And in March this year, Chapweteka alongside teachers from Dedza Secondary School and Stella Maris winners of the 2014 and 2015 contests respectively went to Harare, Zimbabwe.
The competition apart from propelling the speaking of the French language has also helped in unearthing talent.
Meanwhile Chapweteka has also revealed that the French dictation competition which debuted last year will take place on October 8, 2016.
He said this year they are taking a step further by holding the French dictation competition in two more regions.
