With a week before the start of Swaziland Invitational Basketball Tournament, Central Knights basketball team of Lilongwe are racing against time to raise K1.5 million shortfall to enable them travel to the competition.
The team’s budget for the trip is K5.7 million, but they have only raised K3.6 million through various activities and donations.
Knights Head of Marketing and Fundraising, Emanuel Phiri, said the team had not given up on the trip.
“Some individuals have promised to help us and we are keeping our fingers crossed. We will keep on knocking on companies and individuals’ doors until we get the money,” he said.
Knights, who lead the Central Zone Basketball League, are expected to travel to Swaziland on June 20 for the week-long tournament that has attracted 30 teams from nine Southern African countries in the men’s and ladies’ categories.
In an interview from Swaziland yesterday, chairperson of the organising committee, Kuda Zvareva, said preparations for the tournament were at an advanced stage.
The tournament, which started in 2012, is aimed at fostering relationship among basketball teams in Southern Africa.
