Cable Manufacturers Limited has joined calls for Malawians to embrace the spirit of buying locally manufactured goods as a way of boosting the country’s ailing economy.
The company’s Managing Director, Ayaaz Girach, made the call in Mzuzu during the firm’s 20 years celebrations.
He, however, asked government to walk the talk in promoting the Buy Malawi Strategy with proper enforcements, including a ban on the importation of goods that are also produced in the country.
“The cable market did not start well in the country, but currently due to the growth in the construction industry our company is also making progress.
“People are now beginning to understand that locally made products have good quality and low prices as they are designed to suit our Malawian environment and standards,” he said.
Girach said the only setback in the business is the unavailability of some raw materials for making cables such as copper which are imported and fetch high tax charges to be cleared.
He, however, commended Malawians for trusting the company for the two decades of their existence in the country which has enabled them to survive through the economic hardships and is in the process of expanding their factory with billions of kwacha worth of machines already procured.
As part of the celebrations with its customers, a raffle draw was conducted where the company gave away a Samsung J2 phone, home theatre and Samsung J7 phone.
One of the winners, Prince Ndovie, an employee of Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) said Cable Manufacturers products are of good quality and are cheaper because they are produced locally.
