Two people were on Tuesday killed by different sets of mobs in Ndirande Township of Blantyre on allegations of theft.
According to Blantyre police spokesperson, Elizabeth Divala, the first account involved a man who, together with two accomplices, alleged to have attempted to break into a house.
“I t was around 8 o’clock in the evening when three people stormed a certain house in Ndirande Newlines, popularly known as ‘Flats’ with the intension to steal a car battery. The owner of the house smelled a rat and shouted for help. One suspect was caught and was assaulted to death by a mob,” said Divala.
The identity of the man is not yet known.
Another incident involved Mphatso Sinedala who is alleged to have attempted to steal sugarcane from a certain garden in Goliyo in the same township of Ndirande.
“It just happened that the owner of the garden was watching over his garden. After he sensed that there was an intruder in the garden, he shouted for help. Sinedala was then grabbed by the mob and he too was assaulted. Police rushed to the scene but the suspect was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital,” she said.
The police are yet to arrest suspects in connection to the two mob justice cases.
Meanwhile, Divala reminds Malawians that mob justice is punishable by law and perpetrators once caught will be brought to justice.
