Ex-players sponsor Central Region volleyball league

Three former volleyball players have joined hands to sponsor a pre-season tournament for Central Region Volleyball League (CRVL) teams on Saturday in Lilongwe.

The league’s Publicity Secretary, Peter Pemba, said the tournament would help teams to re-assess their preparedness for the new season, which throws off a week later.

Pemba explained that the players, who jointly run an entertainment centre known as C2K Bottlestore in Area 47 in Lilongwe, have contributed K600,000 in cash prizes for the event.

“We are greatly relieved as a league with what has come from C2K. This will motivate our teams to engage an extra gear as they look forward to competing in the league this season,” Pemba said.

He disclosed that the tournament is for all teams registered in category A of the league, which is the most competitive with a maximum of nine outfits.

One of the former players, Chikondi Kachinjika, said the trio decided to sponsor the event to contribute towards the revival of the sports.

He noted that most volleyball teams are self-sponsored and also play in tournaments that are not well-sponsored.

“We, therefore, reached a compromise to help in motivating the teams as they prepare to compete in the new season. It was easy for us to agree on the sponsorship because we have a volleyball background,” Kachinjika stated.

The league failed to throw off on April 2 due to what Chairperson, Robert White, said was the need to accommodate pre-season tournament sponsors.

“We also wanted to give the teams more time to register. The league is quite big, hence the need for a lot of time to be given to teams for registration,” White said.

CRVL comprises four league categories- three for men and one for ladies. These are A, B, Youth and Ladies.

Currently, the league does not have a sponsor.
