Malawi national golf team has received a timely boost ahead of Africa’s Zone VI’s 22nd Championship after Old Mutual donated a set of uniform valued at K2.2 million.

Old Mutual officials presented the uniform to Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) on Wednesday at Blantyre Sports Club.

Old Mutual Marketing and Corporate Affairs Executive, Linda Poya, said it was not the first time that the company had supported the golfing community.

“We have always been associated with golf for the past years. We had to donate the uniform and other equipment to inspire the team. We are encouraged by the fact that most players are the youth who will likely be our clients in future,” she said.

Poya said they were also motivated that the team has promised to break its jinx by finishing among the top three sides during the championship in Swaziland.

GUoM Vice-President, Hudson Kantwanje, thanked Old Mutual for the timely support.

He disclosed that they have set a top-three finish as their target.

“Following the donation, the team is now inspired. We have given them everything which they wanted. They wanted to be in camp for some time and we supported them. They were thinking that they will go to Swaziland without uniforms, but Old Mutual came to our rescue,” he said.

The 10-member delegation, that consist of eight players, is expected to leave the country on Monday for Swaziland via Johannesburg, South Africa.

The team is currently undergoing training in Lilongwe.

GUoM’s Competitions and Fixtures Secretary, Charles Merrick, will double as the leader of delegation and Team Manager.

Chris Kachiguma is the squad’s coach while the players in the team include Paul Chidale, George Chisambo, Adam Sailesi, Dan Phiri, Kondwani Mpula, Witman Brown, Bob Dambo and Symon Moses.
