It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to this brand new column – Well Out!
In this column, golf related issues will be discussed.
Did you know that the fastest growing sport in the world is golf? Since we are now living in a world of prophets, allow me to prophesy that I see football being displaced by golf as the number one sport.
Golf remains the only sport that can be played at a competitive level at literally any age from around eight as long as one can still walk.
On the other hand, life in football is short-lived. Look at the likes of my all-time favorite, Thierry Henry.
The best thing the good man can do at around 40 years old is to be a supporter of a football team and not play.
Phil Mickleson is way older than Henry, but he remains a force to reckon with.
What makes golf unique is that three to four generations can compete in a tournament.
Can you think of any sport in the world that can match that? If we are to refer to the just-ended Malawi Matchplay finals, one Muhammed Patel, who I would estimate to be around 65-plus years, played his semifinals against Ignatius Kambale aged 25- plus years. Although Kambale was victorious, he had a tough time beating his grandfather equivalent [Patel].
I can never think of any sport in this world that has such a unique arrangement.
Do you remember basketball great, Michael Jordan? The lad plays basketball no more.
Guess what he is busy doing. Jordan is now a very good golfer playing off eight handicap.
He is done with basketball because of age. I guess he can still play basketball, but not competitively.
A few misguided individuals consider golf a rich, lazy man’s game.
Well, I still continue to forgive you guys. To complete a full round of golf, one covers an average of eight kilometres.
On the misconception of it being a rich man’s game, the under-privileged programme of the Golf Union of Malawi with the support of the R&A – the world governing body for golf – has over 70 junior golfers.
The purpose of this column, therefore, will be to provide to you as much information as possible.
A number of you are not interested in golf because of the prohibitive information which you have. This column will change that.
