Chessam justifies club registration introduction

by

Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) has explained the rationale behind the introduction of compulsory club registration for players wishing to participate in the association’s organised competitions.

Chessam publicist, Makhosi Nyirenda, said club chess was the heart and soul of Malawi chess, hence it would be difficult for the sport to progress without registering the teams.

“Club chess will bring chess culture in the country. Players will be forced to huddle somewhere during weekends to practise for their league engagements. Juniors will be able to learn a skill or two from senior players,” Nyirenda said.

He said Chessam expects clubs to organise themselves to a level that they would be able to buy equipment such as chess boards, clocks and chess books.

“The coming chess league is not only for the cities, districts will also be required to form their own clubs. So you see, there will be such broader interaction on the chess fronts,” he said.
