One more arrested in Mzuzu fracas case

Police in Mzuzu have arrested a fifth suspect in connection with the violence in Mzuzu on Sunday where Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Lazarus Chakwera held a solidarity rally with some leaders of opposition People’s Party (PP) and Alliance for Democracy (Aford).

The rally which took place at Chibavi primary school ground in Mzuzu was interrupted by some men who came with pangas demanding that anyone in PP’s colours should leave.

This led to a fracas and some participants including one of Chakwera’s bodyguards were injured.

Early this week, the police arrested four suspects identified as Francis Kasyololo 30, George Mwamtobe 38, Lumbani Munthali 29 and Clive Nthakomwa 52.

Regional police spokesperson Maurice Chapola told The Daily Times yesterday that the police in Mzuzu have arrested one more suspect.

“We can confirm that we have another suspect in our custody. His name is Thembisire Nkosi aged 32 from Nkosi Village Traditional Authority Nthwalo in Mzimba District,” said Chapola.

The suspects will be charged with proposing violence which is contrary to section 86 of the penal code. Meanwhile, the five are still in police custody.

Despite numerous reports pointing towards PP’s former senior member Christopher Mzomera Ngwira to have hired the thugs, the estranged PP provincial chairperson was non-committal on the accusation when contacted saying he was sympathising with those that were hurt.

Meanwhile, police have appealed to everyone who sustained injuries to report to the law enforcers with their medical reports so that statements can be recorded.
