Ash Godambe and Connie Muguvu-Karuku overcame emotions to lift inaugural Bash Memorial Golf tournament honours at Blantyre Sports Club on Wednesday.

Bash Automotive Limited organised the tournament in memory of the company’s managing director-designate, late Bashir Shariff Jnr.

He died a few days before taking over the management of the Blantyre company.

Therefore, emotions were to be expected during the golf event.

Nonetheless, in the men’s category, Godambe emerged as the winner after collecting two birdies.

With a handicap of seven, Godambe collected 20-stableford points to beat a field of 34 golfers.

Steve Kamanga finished as the runner-up with 17 points, while James Katunga was third with 16 points.

“I was here for a different assignment and I decided to play. It ended up being a pretty day for me on the golf course,” said the Lilongwe-based golfer, Godambe.

In the ladies’ category, Muguvu-Karuku, with handicap-17, beat six female golfers with 14-stableford points.

Her runner-up, Harriet Marian with a handicap of 35, finished with 15 points.

Alfred Chikale posted 20-stableford points to count out Peter Lumbe (15 points) to the second slot in the juniors’ category.

Vanessa Mtupa was the lone contestant in the girls’ section. Playing off handicap 30, Matupa gathered three points.

Bash Automotive Limited managing director, Bashir Shariff Snr, said they organised the contest to celebrate the life of his first-born son, who died on March 20 last year, 11 days before taking over the company.

“I promised my son that he would take over my business once he turned 18, but unfortunately, he died 11 days before that time. I did not understand his death. However, we have to celebrate his life in a special way, hence this tournament, which will be conducted annually in his memory,” Bashir Snr said.
