Angry residents go on rampage in Mbayani

In an act that can be described as total vengeance for the mysterious killing of a 17- year old boy, Praise Muha, relatives and angry residents of Mbayani Township in Blantyre on Monday went on rampage and demolished a bar and four houses.

Following a brawl with a female attendant, at ‘Sports Man’ bar in the same township it is alleged that between February end this year and March 2, the owner of the drinking joint known by his surname Makochi allegedly hired Nelson Kampalire and three others to kill Mbandambanda.

“They took him by trick to Nkula in Chileka where they killed him and dumped his body in water fulfilling the bar owner’s assignment,” alleged one of the witnesses we spoke to yesterday.

In a deal gone sour, the suspects disagreed on how to share the money allegedly paid by the bar owner. They then revealed the ordeal with the name of Kampalire mentioned as the only killer.

“Upon discovery of the body on Sunday, relatives and some residents went on and razed down Makochi’s bar and four houses belonging to Kampalire’s father on Monday afternoon.

“It is however surprising that Kampalire is the only victim of the act considering that the other three are also from this area and are well

known in this area,” said Alice Jussa, a neighbour to Kampalire who also witnessed what happened.

According to Jussa, property such as refrigerators, iron sheets, sofa sets as well as electric metres were ransacked from the houses.

Meanwhile, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer for Blantryre, Andrew Mayawo confirmed the fracas.

He said so far, the said Kampalire has been arrested in connection with the fracas.

According to Chileka Police’s Beatrice Mwale the matter was reported as if Praise drowned in Lunzu River after failing to swim ashore.

“The matter came to light when his mother who is in South Africa sent money but his relatives were failing to reach him on his mobile,” she said.
