Boxing board urges officials to budget for WBC seminar

Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) has urged local ringside officials to start budgeting for World Boxing Council (WBC) convention which the country will host next year in May.

During the convention, expected to run from May 11 to 15, ringside officials such as judges, referees, time keepers and ringside doctors, are expected to attend seminars at US$50 (about K35,000) per course.

The board’s president, Lonzoe Zimba, said it was important for local ringside officials to equip themselves with advanced skills and knowledge.

“They should not look at the cost but rather the opportunities they will get if they are successful during the seminar,” he said.

Zimba said being the hosts, MPBCB was negotiating with WBC to reduce the fees for local officials.

“In principle, they have agreed that local officials should pay about K20,000 instead of about K35,000. We hope local ringside officials will take advantage of this,” he said.

During the convention, WBC will also run other courses targeting matchmakers, trainers, promoters and managers.

“Similarly, if local promoters and others that are involved in management of boxers and stables attend this, then our boxing will develop. Some squabbles happen because others don’t seem to understand what is supposed to happen,” he said.

Zimba said WBC president, Mauricio Sulaiman, is also expected to attend the convention.

“This will be a blessing to the nation and Africa as a whole to have the WBC gracing the convention. As you will recall, we won the bid to host the convention when I went to China last year,” he said.

Meanwhile, WBC is set to send its delegation to Malawi this month to monitor facilities to be used for the event
