Parliament not meeting Tuesday

Burial of former Member of Parliament for Mchinji West Constituency, Billy Kanjira Banda is expected to take place Tuesday in his constituency.

Speaker of the National Assembly Richard Msowoya made the announcement in Parliament Monday.

Msowoya said as such, Parliament is not meeting Tuesday.

“In this regard, the business committee, at its meeting this morning agreed that the House should not meet Tuesday [today], to allow honourable members to attend the burial ceremony of the departed member,” Msowoya said.

According to Msowoya, burial will take place at Chalenga Village in the area of Traditional Authority Simphasi in Mchinji district.

Kanjira Banda collapsed on Sunday and was pronounced dead upon arrival at DaeYang Luke Hospital.

Yesterday, a minute of silence was observed in Parliament before business resumed in the house. Lilongwe Msozi South MP Vitus Dzoole Mwale said the Malawi Congress Party was saddened by Kanjira Banda’s death.

Condolences to the bereaved family kept flowing as MPs contributed to issues in the House.

According to a press release from Clerk of Parliament Fiona Kalemba, Parliament is saddened by Kanjira’s death.

“The membership of the House and Staff of Parliament of Malawi are deeply touched by the death of Honourable Billy Kanjira Banda, MP. May his soul rest in peace,” reads the press release.
