TNM on Saturday donated 2,000 tree seedlings each to Nyika Media Club and Marymount Secondary School in support of the two institutions initiatives to plant trees and make Malawi greener.
The presentation ceremony for the trees took place at Lusangazi Forest Reserve in Mzuzu where TNM planted trees as part of TNM’s 2016 tree planting exercise under which it targets to plant 10,000 seedlings in the northern region of the country.
TNM Head of Region in the North, Richard Kwatiwani, said the company decided to partner with Nyika Media Club and Marymount Secondary School to act as ambassadors for tree planting in the region.
“The northern region was once the sawyers dream as it had abundance of trees in places like Chikangawa and several forests. But these are now depleted,” said Kwatiwani.
“Today we make a passionate appeal to all patriotic citizens to join us in this radical shift aimed at addressing the scourge of deforestation which is accelerating the pace of climate change, causing drought and flooding in its wake,” he said.
Receiving the donation, Nyika Media Club chairperson, Deogratias Mmana, commended TNM for the donation, saying his club was delighted to be part of the initiative to make Malawi green again.
“We will plant the trees at one of the primary schools in the region to help in inculcating a culture of planting trees among children in the country,” he said.
