It is still early days in training, but Malawi national golf coach, Chris Kachiguma, is impressed with what he is seeing in his 18 charges holed up at Lilongwe Golf Club.

The team, which has some up-and-coming players, is tuning up for next month’s Zone VI tournament in Mbabane in Swaziland on April 11.

“Paul Chidale is playing very good golf [and so is the case with] Adam Sailesi and George Chisambo. Some are just playing average golf. These are just the qualifiers. After this, we are going to come up with the final national team,” Kachiguma said.

Malawi team is determined to improve on its miserable eighth-place finish recorded during last year’s edition held in Uganda.

The hosts won the 2015 championship.

Team manager, Charles Merrick, during the week, said Golf Union of Malawi was now focusing on the future by including in camp more up-and-coming players. The final squad will be named next month.

Malawi will feature two teams in Division A and B of the international championship, whose record winners are South Africa. The South Africans finished second to Uganda last year in Kampala.

Malawi squad’s notable inclusions include Gift Landisi, Kondwani Mphula, Dan Phiri, Symon Moses, Witman Brown, Bob Dambo, Richard Mdeza and Chris Mzokomera.

Conspicuosly missing in the squad are Malawi’s highly-respected golfers,Victor Kachepatsonga, Adack Sailesi and Henry Mtuta.
