Water supply to improve Bangwe

Residents of Bangwe Township, one of the places in Blantyre City experiencing water supply problem, will soon breathe a sigh of relief as the reservoir tank and the new booster pump at Midima roundabout will start supplying water to the surrounding areas in the township in the next two weeks.

Blantyre Water Board spokesperson Priscilla Mateyu said this yesterday during a media tour to the pump and tank sites to appreciate the progress of the multi-million kwacha project.

“The project is coming towards the end having started last year in June and probably it will end in two weeks. There has been tremendous progress and what remains now are some minor works which the contractor will be able to finalise soon,” said Mateyu.

According to Mateyu, the main problem with Bangwe over the years has been lack of the booster pump to drive water to uplands in the township and the absence of the reservoir tank that can hold water.

She said initially, water was flowing direct from the pump to the taps a development that saw some areas receiving constant water supply while others were short of supply.

“What we have done now is to erect a tank at an upper land right in the township so that water will be directed from the booster pump to the reservoir tank and from the tank it will be distributed through gravitation force to the water taps, that will see everyone in the township benefiting and there will be no intermittent supply of water,” said Mateyu adding that the project cost about K367 million with a tank that has 305,000 litres capacity which will supply water to a population of about 75,000 people.
