Malawi national football team goalkeeper, Simplex Nthala, has extended for two years his contract with Mozambique football league giants, Maxaquene.
“The contract expired in November, and the club offered me an extension despite that I am serving a one-year ban,” Nthala said in a telephone interview on Wednesday.
The former Be Forward Wanderers goalkeeper was banned last June for allegedly beating up a referee during a league match in Maputo. He denies the charge. The Mozambique season kick-offs next week.
“My club’s management appealed against the ban, but the league has not attended to the appeal. What it means is that I will just serve the remaining months and return to action in July,” Nthala said.
Nthala also clarified that he did not join Vilankulos as indicated in the recent Football Association of Malawi call-up for the national team.
The seasoned custodian was recalled to the Flames during the 2015 Cecafa Senior Cup in Ethiopia, where the Flames finished in the quarter-finals. Nthala had mixed fortunes during the tournament.
“It is good that the national team coach, Ernest Mtawali, has called-up experienced players. We need to blend talent with experience. The onus is now on the players to prove themselves if given a chance,” he said.
