Southern Zone Basketball League (Sozobal) has announced the commencement of the new season on March 27 with more divisions set to be introduced.
General secretary, James Dalo, said the divisions will accommodate players from secondary schools, school leavers and the working class.
He expressed hope that the growth would attract the corporate world
that has shied away from bankrolling the league for many years.
“It is a challenge that we are taking head on. We still do not have a sponsor but we believe increasing the number of teams and divisions will send a message to companies and organisations that we mean business,” Dalo explained.
He added that the increase has been necessitated by considerable numbers of people interested in playing organised basketball.
Dalo also disclosed that there will be a league bonanza a week before the official throw-off of the league.
“This one will be for the four teams that did well last season. They are Brix, Magang’a, Crazy Warriors and Polytechnic,” the general secretary stated.
Veteran player for league and national champions Brix, Victor Jere, said his team was determined to show off the skills they acquired during their end- January tour of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, where they played two friendly games.
“We would not want to be selfish. We went to play in Tanzania because we won a national tournament. Our wish is to see whatever we learnt there benefitting Sozobal and the whole country,” Jere stressed.
With the increased number of teams, the league’s home base at the
Blantyre Youth Centre will likely be a beehive of activity every weekend
