Wisley Phiri elected Ictam president

Sparc Systems Limited managing director Wisley Phiri has been elected as ICT Association of Malawi (Ictam) president.

He was elected during the association’s annual general meeting which took place in Lilongwe on Saturday after three years without such a gathering for the association.

Phiri amassed 28 votes against Maganizo Manowe who got eight votes. Manowe is now vice president for the grouping.

In his acceptance speech, Phiri said the committee’s first priority would be to set up a secretariat within three months.

“We also want to help the government in the drafting of bills affecting the ITC sector in the country. Our aim is to revamp the sector so that it benefits the country,” said Phiri.

Parliamentary chairperson for media, information and communications committee, Samuel Kawale – who was guest of honour at the meeting, said ICT has proven to be a key enabler of socio economic progress and development.

“ICT enhances productivity that helps economic growth, reduces poverty and improves living standards in various ways. Any serious government has to put in place strategic goals to ensure that the country is on the road to sound ICT infrastructure that will develop a competitive industrial and service sector,” said Kawale.

Other office bearers elected during the AGM included Daud Suleman who was elected to the position of general secretary; position of treasurer went to Tuntufye Mwamlima while Bram fudzulani was elected as publicity secretary.
