Central Region Football Association (CRFA) general secretary, Bernard Chiwiriwiri Harawa, on Saturday demanded an improved subvention package from Football Association of Malawi (Fam).
Harawa, speaking after Fam finance director Christopher Mdolo’s 2016 budget presentation, noted that the current K200,000 which Fam gives regional associations undermines their constitutional mandate of grassroots football development.
“It’s unfortunate. You are talking about grassroots football, but yet you are neglecting regional associations by giving them K200,000 which is not enough,” Harawa said.
Fam president, Walter Nyamilandu, said the concern was valid and it will be tabled by his executive committee.
“Before this meeting, we did not receive any request for a review of the subvention, but we can sit down and review that,” Nyamilandu said.
Earlier, National Coaches Association’s acting-general secretary, Benjamin Nyirenda, diverting from a debate on coaches’ minimum qualifications, schooled the delegates not to misuse the word grassroots football.
“When talking about grassroots football, we mean that involving Under-12, Under-10 and Under-eight. We mean that which is played on the street by children. It’s not Premier Division or Division One,” Nyirenda said in a thin-veiled attack on the regional associations which apparently manage premier division, division one and two leagues.
