AHL committed to reforestation

AHL Group has reaffirmed its commitment towards reforestation as a way towards sustainability of the tobacco production and business in the country.

Assistant Floors Manager for Limbe Auction Floors Simon Chirwa made the pledge on the sidelines of a tree-planting exercise the company held at Nanjiri Primary School, in Traditional Authority Chikowi’s area, in Zomba.

The exercise is part of the company’s drive to plant over 30,000 seedlings across the country this year.

According to Chirwa, the group has realised with shock the huge impact that tobacco production has had on the wanton cutting down of trees especially for curing the leaf.

He said, in that regard, the company has reaffirmed its commitment of replanting trees across the country to restore the lost glory.

“We are advocating, through all the subsidiaries of AHL Group, for a tree planting exercise where we will plant thousands of trees in every district of the country,” said Chirwa.

He then called on the tobacco farmers to take a leading role in ensuring they follow modern ways of tobacco curing and drying that would conserve the trees

One of the farmers who attended the tree-planting exercise said the commitment by AHL has empowered them to also take part in planting trees as individuals within their communities.

“We are more than willing to take part in the process of replanting the trees for that is the future of agriculture here in Malawi,” he said.
