M’mbelwa V faults government on Chiefs Council

Inkosi ya Makosi M’mbelwa has asked government to fund chief’s council meetings in the district because it is where they discuss crucial matters pertaining to development in the district.

M’mbelwa said this recently during the district full council meeting.

“As chiefs we don’t have a platform to discuss critical issues affecting development, because the only time we meet is when there is a full council meeting. So it’s my plea that you consider us as chiefs,” he said.

Commenting on the matter, Traditional Authority (T/A) Jalavikuba observed that there were many chieftaincy wrangles in the district because chiefs were undermined.

District Commissioner for M’mbelwa District Council, Thomas Chirwa, said initially chiefs were supposed to meet at least four times in a year. But they only met twice due to lack of funds as part of the money was also used to pay councilors arrears for December last year.

“As a Council we do not generate enough income from ground rents to fund regular chiefs’ council meetings in the district,” said Chirwa.
