Malawi Police shoot suspected robber in Lilongwe

Malawi Police in Lilongwe Tuesday shot and arrested 30-year-old Thomson Chigoneka who was among a group of people who were stealing metal pipes at the newly constructed Bingu International Stadium.

According to the deputy national police publicist Inspector Thomeck Nyaude, police who were on patrol on the night of February 15, 2015 managed to arrest Chigoneka.

“The police who were working at the stadium thought of patrolling around it and then they found a group of criminals who were busy stealing the metal pipes of the stadium after they saw the police all the suspects started running away and the police responded by opening fire shooting one of the suspects on the right leg,” said Nyaude.

The police took the suspect to Kamuzu Central Hospital for treatment and he is expected to appear before court to answer charges of theft once he is discharged.

Nyaude further said that the suspects had drilled a hole which they used to get into the stadium to steal the pipes and other materials.

He said that some of the suspects are at large but assured that the police have intensified investigations to bring to book the other criminals.
