kawangaMzuzu University Alumni (Mzuni Alumni) has organised a dinner and dance that would be held at Sunbird Capital Hotel in Lilongwe in April to fundraise for the re-stocking of Mzuzu University Library that was gutted by fire on December 18, 2015.

According to a press release by the organising committee of the event, President Peter Mutharika has delegated the Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Emmanuel Fabiano, to be Guest-of-Honour at the event.

The statement says some individuals, companies and organisations have already pledged their financial and material support towards this event.

Spokesperson for the event and chairperson of the Mzuni Alumni Media Committee, Clifton Kawanga, said the alumni realises its responsibility to give back to Mzuzu University, especially in this time of need.

“Since its inception in 1999, Mzuzu University has played a huge role in tertiary education in Malawi through a number of programmes. We are equally saddened by the loss of books and other equipment after the fire gutted the library in December, 2015.

“We would like to join all the stakeholders and donors who are working tirelessly to assist the university financially, materially and morally to restore the library’s operations,” Kawanga said.

He appealed to individuals, companies and organisations to support the cause adding that those who are willing to assist financially should do so.

“The banking details are as follows; MZUNI Alumni Association, National Bank of Malawi (NBM), Henderson Street Branch, Account Number: 1002155881. We can assure the public that the funds will be used for the intended purpose and systems to account for the funds have been put in place,” Kawanga said.

Mzuni Alumni is further calling on all Malawians of goodwill to join the Mzuzu University community in this fundraising event. Sponsorship categories and benefits of the same are available on request while individuals and alumni can pay K30,000 to attend the dinner and dance.

Apart from the library, part of the funds to be raised would be used to construct toilets and procurement of classroom furniture.

Mzuzu University Alumni was formed in 2005 to uphold the values of the university by promoting and complementing its efforts in providing quality education, training and research and complementary services to meet the technological, social and economic needs of individuals and communities in Malawi and beyond.
